The Black Mountains can be found in the West side of the Breacon Beacons National Park. The Black Mountain road (A4069) has become very popular since it was featured on BBC’s Top Gear, with Jeremy Clarckson driving the AMG SLK along this route. This route has some of the best corners, and just looking at the route you can see what a route this is.

My favourite road. Still relatively quiet, a good mix of fast and tight sections and the views are to die for when you get to the hairpins.
If you’re travelling north there’s a car park on the right hand side just before you reach the first hairpin, this usually has an ice cream van/burger van in it. I’ve never stopped there when it’s open. It’s where Clarkson stops in the CLK DTM to read the safety warning.
The other place to stop is just before the first hairpin (if you’re going north) and there’s a community hall which does cheap coffee down in Brynaman. There’s also a minimarket that does snacks and sandwiches if you fancy taking something to eat or stopping off afterwards.
Be careful if you’re in a low slung car though. There are a couple of quite large bumps in the middle of the road just north of the hairpins.
I drove this road last weekend in my TVR Cerbera, gotta say its a blast. It was that good I had to try it three more two more times after the initial go.
Alex is right, be aware of the bumps, caught me out a few times, but the hairpin is just amazing, give it a bit of throttle on the way out and the backend just swings out.
Fantastic drive but watch out for mobile speed cameras in the villages at the south end. Some great single track roads run off it as well; well worth and explore!
