The Black Mountains can be found in the West side of the Breacon Beacons National Park. The Black Mountain road (A4069) has become very popular since it was featured on BBC’s Top Gear, with Jeremy Clarckson driving the AMG SLK along this route. This route has some of the best corners, and just looking at the map below, you can see that this is one hell of a road to drive.

AlexMy favourite road. Still relatively quiet, a good mix of fast and tight sections and the views are to die for when you get to the hairpins.
If you’re travelling north there’s a car park on the right hand side just before you reach the first hairpin, this usually has an ice cream van/burger van in it. I’ve never stopped there when it’s open. It’s where Clarkson stops in the CLK DTM to read the safety warning.
The other place to stop is just before the first hairpin (if you’re going north) and there’s a community hall which does cheap coffee down in Brynaman. There’s also a minimarket that does snacks and sandwiches if you fancy taking something to eat or stopping off afterwards.

AlexBe careful if you’re in a low slung car though. There are a couple of quite large bumps in the middle of the road just north of the hairpins.

RichardI drove this road last weekend in my TVR Cerbera, gotta say its a blast. It was that good I had to try it three more two more times after the initial go.
Alex is right, be aware of the bumps, caught me out a few times, but the hairpin is just amazing, give it a bit of throttle on the way out and the backend just swings out.

Steve GodsellFantastic drive but watch out for mobile speed cameras in the villages at the south end. Some great single track roads run off it as well; well worth and explore!

Simona kazFew bad points 1. Can’t really speed more than 40-57mph .. 2.Too many BENDS AND stupid NARROW LANES. Very dangerous. 3.Too many bikers !
I went from start a4069 then south to the “mountain road” in the upper brynamman village.
The view at the top is A fantastic wide angle view. where you can park up. One man in a SILLY TINY ice cream kiosk !. Who wants a ICE CREAM. Why!.after that the ride is downhill all the way to the upper brynamman village. Bendy and dangerously narrow roads! Nearly lost control…
Overall this route is TOO DANGEROUS to speed , only slow driving whilst admiring the views!
Drove in an Audi TT.

Simona WalkerNice view at the top. Park up and enjoy the wide angle view. The ice cream van should not be there out of place. The road is down hill after that. Drive carefully as the roads are narrow and very bendy and too many bikers whizzing pass.
