The actual Hartside Pass is only small part of this route, but the whole of the A686 is an excellent road to drive, so why just stop at once you have done the pass, complete the whole road and have a huge smile on your face after getting to the A69 near Hexam.

JordanDone this road twice this year, First in the wet, second on a 23 degree afternoon. Was fantastic but there was an accident in front of me 0.5 mile Penrith side of the cafe due to someone cutting the corner, so the road was closed.
I ask anyone who goes on this road to have fun, but to take care and to keep to your side of the road, as the consequences can be dire.
nevertheless this is a great road.

ChrisAs Derek said, the route shown on the map is completely wrong. Hartside Pass runs from Alston to Penrith I believe.

Jacqueline BodenDO NOT use Hartside pass in the winter. Continue on west road from A1 to M6 – much safer. I once made the mistake of trying this ‘shortcut’ at end of December and hope never to be so scared again.
